HIPPS Packages

Following ISO/TR 12489, a HIPPS package is defined as a specialized autonomous safety instrumented system with a high enough safety integrity level to prevent equipment from exceeding its design parameters. HIPPS systems are a common and superior alternative to mechanical protective devices in the oil and gas industry. The HIPPS system safeguards against health and safety risks associated with unintended over-pressurization, which can lead to flaring and venting, resulting in the catastrophic release of toxic, flammable, and explosive chemicals.

To safely shut off the system before a high-level event surpasses the design parameters, High Integrity Pressure Protection System (HIPPS) packages are placed between the low-pressure and high-pressure sections of the system. HIPPS packages protect the system from unanticipated high-level events such as overpressure, high temperature, or any other critical events that could compromise system integrity and create hazardous conditions.
