According to the ISO\TR 12489 definition, a non-conventional autonomous safety instrumented system with sufficiently high safety integrity to protect equipment against exceeding the design parameters is considered a HIPPS Skids. HIPS and HIPPS,a common feature and a superior alternative to the mechanical protective devices in oil and gas industry. HIPPS Skids are reliable system that provides safeguard to the health and safety hazards arising from the catastrophic release of flammable, toxic, and explosive chemicals due to the unplanned over-pressurization resulting in flaring and venting.
High integrity protection system skids (HIPS Skids) is a barricade between the low-pressure and high-pressure areas in the system allowing for safely shutting off before a high-level event in the system exceeding the design parameters. HIPS skids are utilized to protect the system from a combination of unplanned high-level events related to over-pressure, high temperature, or any other high-level event which may compromise the integrity of the system causing hazardous conditions.
