TEMPERATURE

Over time, we’ve used up a lot of the oil that’s easy to reach, so now we have to drill deeper to get more. But the deeper we go, the hotter it gets. Right now, the temperature of an oil well can get up to more than 200 degrees Celsius.

To ensure that parts don’t break down, we must use materials that can handle high temperatures without getting weaker or breaking.

It’s worth noting that the operative temperature range of Inconel alloy C276 is somewhat limited, maxing out at 1230°C. On the other hand, alloy 625 can withstand much higher temperatures, up to 1800°C. That being said, other factors make these alloys stand out as exceptional materials.

STRESS

When we drill for oil, we have to dig deep. The deeper we dig, the hotter and more pressurised it gets. The pressure increases by 0.052 pounds per square inch for every foot we go down. It’s so pressurised that we can’t use manual pumps to extract the oil. But this high pressure can be dangerous because it might cause the pipes to break and cause a lot of damage.

CORROSION

Metal parts in oil-drilling systems can be damaged by a process called corrosion. The oil contains substances that can eat away at the metal, like sulphur and chlorine, as well as other things, like carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide. When drilling happens offshore, the whole system is exposed to seawater which can add to the corrosion. This means that all pipes, tubes, and other parts must be strong enough to withstand different types of corrosion.

When drilling for oil, regular steel just won’t cut it due to heat, stress, and corrosion. That’s why nickel alloys are the way to go. In particular, Inconel alloys 625 and C276 are top choices for their exceptional performance.

INCONEL ALLOY 625

Alloy 625 is famous for oil-drilling systems because of its strong composition. It is made up of nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and niobium, which means it doesn’t need extra hardening and can resist corrosion from many different chemicals, even at high levels.

This material stays strong even in hot or cold conditions. It’s great for making different parts because it’s easy to work with. It doesn’t get holes or cracks quickly and won’t break down from certain chemicals, which means the parts made from it are less likely to fail.

INCONEL ALLOY C276

Inconel alloy C276 is a strong material that can resist damage caused by stress and certain chemicals. It’s made with a mix of metals that includes nickel, chromium and molybdenum. This makes it a good choice for situations where corrosion and cracking are likely to occur.

This material is good at handling a type of sour natural gas. This gas has harmful stuff like chlorides, hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. They often use a type of metal called C276 to make parts for the inside and outside of gas wells, pipes, and other essential pieces.
